Unlicensed monitoring took place of dangerous tree felling and the provision of access routes to three recorded monuments located within a forestry plantation in the townland of Tawnywaddyduff, Moygownagh, Co Mayo.
The project involved monitoring of tree felling around MA021-044, a megalithic tomb, MA020-001, a megalithic tomb and MA020-002, a stone row. The monitoring was carried out on 5 November and 2 December 2014.
The tree felling was carried out to remove dangerous trees and facilitate the development of public access routes to the monuments through the established Coillte forestry plantation originally planted in the 1960s. The monuments were described by the Survey of the Megalithic tombs of Ireland (1964) and it would appear that all are still relatively well preserved despite over 50 years of forestry works being carried out. The three monuments are now clear of trees and buffer zones have been established.
