Pre-development testing was carried out on a site in advance of its development at Turin townland, County Mayo, on 18 February 2014. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a single storey residential accommodation block. Testing was required due to the site being partly within the constraint for Turin Castle (MA122-017), located over 90m to the east. The site was located in a large field of undulating pasture, no archaeological features were visible within it.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches located to best cover the development area. The trenches measured 5.9m, 10.2m, 11.8m and 20.6m long respectively; 1.4-1.7m wide and 0.3-0.8m deep. Below the topsoil was grey/brown loose sand and gravel, grey boulder clay and limestone bedrock. No finds were in evidence.
Testing revealed natural undisturbed stratigraphy, i.e. topsoil above natural subsoils and bedrock. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
