The test trenching was carried out in order to ascertain the exact nature and extent of potential archaeological deposits that may lie subsurface on the site, specifically LI005-013---, castle unclassified, the location of which is thought to be in the vicinity of or within the subject site. The castle is marked ‘site of’ on the OS 1st edition six inch map. This development site is now a small green open area in a housing estate.
Four trenches were excavated across the site. Trench 1 (7.5m north-south by 1.3m, depth 0.3m) consisted of sod, topsoil onto a clean boulder clay. Trench 2 (10m east-west by 1.3m, depth 0.3m) consisted of sod, topsoil onto a clean boulder clay. Trench 3 (7.5m north-south by 1.3m, depth 0.3m) consisted of sod, topsoil onto a clean boulder clay. Trench 4 (10m east-west by 1.3m, depth 0.3m) consisted of sod, topsoil onto a clean boulder clay. No archaeological features were encountered.
