An archaeological mitigation strategy in advance of the Smithwicks Visitor Attraction Project, Diageo Complex, was implimented to minimise the impact the proposed development may have on any archaeology. Pre-construction test trenching took place within the courtyard of the Smithwicks Visitor Building, and in the yard to the east of this building (within the Diageo Ltd complex), towards Bateman Quay. Test trenching was followed by construction stage archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance works.

Several mortar-bonded stone walls were identified in the test trench in the yard to the east of the Visitor Building. These walls likely correspond to walls depicted on Rocque's Map of Kilkenny (1758), and walls depicted on the 1st ed. OS map of the area. Artefacts recovered from the soils the walls were built on indicate a post-medieval date (18th-19th century) for the walls.
