Test excavations were undertaken in advance of an application to construct a new school at Listellick North, Tralee, Co Kerry. The proposed development site is situated on an elevated greenfield pasture on a lower south-west ridge slope of the Stacks Mountains. The rectangular site, comprising c. 3.25 acres, slopes gently from south to north. Seven linear 1m wide test excavation trenches (T1-T7) were opened across the site at 10m intervals. Light brown topsoil to an average depth of 0.35m overlay sterile oxidised bright orange material. Occasional shattered shale was manifest within the sterile subsoil. Soil depth gradually increases to north due to soil creep associated with the natural slope to north.
