Test excavations were undertaken in advance of a planning application to construct a new National Sports Arena at Derreen, Killarney, Co. Kerry. The proposed development site is situated on level low-lying ground on the northern limits of the urban extent of Killarney town. Four linear test trenches, (T1-T4), were opened that revealed that the site was previously a local authority dumpsite. Consequently, the trenches were not fully completed.
