Monitoring took place along a 22m open-cut trench extending from the vehicle access entrance to Custom House towards the offices of Dúchas na Gaillimhe near the entrance to the Red Earl's Hall (GA094-100041-) within the Historic core of Galway (GA094-100) in March 2014 on behalf of Bord Gáis Networks. Groundworks involved the lifting of existing paving cobbles and the machine excavation of modern gravel aggregates along a trench that ran north-west/south-east from Flood Street into the courtyard of Custom House and turned 90° to run north-east/south-west to the offices of Dúchas na Gaillimhe. The stratigraphy below the paving cobbles consisted of fill for modern services, bedding sand (0.4m) overlying gravel (0.6m) which, in places, lay on a dark brown silty clay with frequent inclusions of oyster shell, animal bone and charcoal flecks at the base of the trench (0.7-0.8m deep). This layer was exposed but not impacted upon by the groundworks. No finds or features were found during the course of the excavation of the gas main trench.
