Archaeological monitoring was carried out within the Historic core of Galway (RMP GA094-100) in October 2014 by the author on behalf of Bord Gáis Networks. The works involved the installation of approx. 220m of 90mm PE gas main along Lombard Street, Cross Street (Upper & Lower) and Quay Street. The trench dimensions were approximately 700-800mm deep by 600mm wide. The pipe was laid along existing carriageways and the stratigraphy consisted generally of tarmac and road base over modern rubble fill. There were frequent utility pipes found along the route including a stone lined culvert at the junction of Cross Street Upper and Bridge Street. Along Cross Street Lower the new pipe followed the line of a redundant cast iron main minimizing any potential impacts. Along Quay Street the underlying deposits were made up of modern sand and gravel. Throughout the monitoring programme no archaeology was noted.
