Test trenching of a proposed school site at Knocknacarra in Galway City was carried out on behalf of Galway Vocational Educational Committee. A desk-based study and assessment of a potential standing stone within the sitewas previously carried out. For the current assessment, 13 trenches were mechanically excavated within the site. A building survey of a vernacular stone building was also carried out. Subsoil consisted of compact orange stony clay with significant outcropping of bedrock and the presence of large glacial boulders. Topsoil and underlying peat was 0.1-1m deep across the site. Deeper areas corresponded to areas of peat between rock outcrops through the middle portion of the site.
No archaeological material was identified.
