In January 2014, testing was carried out in a field to the north-east of Annaghdown ecclesiastical site, GA069-001003-17. The aim of the works was to establish if the lands there would be suitable for an extension to the modern graveyard. The investigations proved the presence of subsurface archaeological remains and identified a probable outer vallum (enclosing ditch) of early medieval date. On establishing the presence of archaeological features it was decided not to continue with any further investigations. Metalworking debris (slag) was recorded in the upper fill of the backfilled vallum and other finds included a bronze shank that may have belonged to a dress pin or belt buckle.
