Monitoring of topsoil stripping/primary ground reduction works was undertaken from 9–24 January 2014, having been commissioned by Acheson and Glover Group, and relates to the approved Planning Consent for a proposed 9 hectare lateral extension in a northerly, easterly and westerly direction to the quarry area at Crievehill Quarry, Fivemiletown, Co. Fermanagh (Planning Ref: L/2011/0269/F).
The current monitoring works relate to an area measuring approximately 285m (north-east/south-west) x 70m within the south-east portion of the proposed development area (PDA) only. The area stripped covered approximately 1.73 hectares in total.
All ground-breaking works within Phase 1 of the PDA were undertaken by a back-acting mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket operating under archaeological supervision.
Topsoil removal revealed undisturbed glacial subsoil, which consisted of a sandy, gravelly clay, at a depth of 0.3–0.5m across the site. No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified during this initial phase of monitoring works at the site.
