A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken across Dublin City from 09 July 2013 to 31 January 2014. The works formed part of Contract 8 of the Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project, which involved the replacement of the existing watermains and associated connecting services within the following District Metered Areas (DMA) administered by Dublin County Council (DCC): Gardiner Street DMA, Camden Street Upper DMA, Clanwilliam Place DMA, Terenure Road North DMA, Christchurch Place DMA, and Crumlin Cross DMA.

A substantial portion of the proposed trenches were opened within the historic core of Dublin City and in close proximity to archaeological sites listed in the Record of Monuments and Places.

The monitoring programme identified archaeological remains at two locations within the Gardiner Street DMA. The first area was located in North Great Georges Street where eight post-medieval (18th century) red brick coal cellars were identified. The second area, located in Gardiner Place, consisted of two post-medieval red brick coal cellars. The coal cellars are thought to be directly associated with the terrace of Georgian buildings lining these streets.

The coal cellars were left in situ and were not impacted upon by the rehabilitation works.

No other finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the monitoring programme.
