Planning permission for extensions to a semi-detached house and the construction of a new detached residence in the western gardens was granted subject to a number of conditions, of which one required that the site be tested.
The site is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential established for Saggart, and lies directly to the south of a graveyard, incorporating the remains of an ecclesiastical enclosure, medieval church, a cross base, crosses, a cross slab, a stone head and architectural fragments.
A total of nine test trenches, of varying lengths and orientations, were excavated within the boundaries of the site. All trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket (1.5m wide), following which the sides and bases of the trenches were cleaned by hand and examined. In addition, all the spoil generated by the excavation of the test trenches was ‘raked-over’ in an attempt to increase the potential for the recovery of archaeological artefacts. No artefacts were recovered and no subsurface features were uncovered.
