This report refers to archaeological monitoring carried out by the writer during re-surfacing of a car-park to the rear of 17-25 Thomas Street (entered by Thomas Court), Dublin 8. The site lies off what was once the main east-west thoroughfare to the medieval walled city of Dublin, which lay to the east, in and around Christ Church Cathedral. The development site possibly lies within the environs of the medieval abbey of St Thomas, substantial remains of which have been found to the south-east at South Earl Street, Hanbury Lane and Swan Alley. These findings included the identification of part of the cemetery, the stone church and the enclosing precinct abbey wall. The re-surfacing of the car-park was designed to be low Impact, requiring excavation between 200mm and 400mm in depth in general, following an archaeological assessment carried out by Mary Mc Mahon (2014). Deeper excavation thought to be required around the gate area was deemed not necessary and was not carried out. A layer of concrete that extended partially throughout the eastern side of the site was also left in situ.
