Monitoring was undertaken at the Lady Grattan Fountain, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, between February and May 2014 for GMC (Ireland) Ltd on behalf of the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA), now Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).
Monitoring was undertaken of groundworks associated with the removal of the Lady Grattan Fountain and two associated horse troughs to temporary storage as part of the Heritage Works programme in advance of construction of the Luas Cross City (LCC). This phase of Heritage Works was delivered in parallel with the LCC Utilities Works programme at St Stephen’s Green.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of monitoring. Samples of brick and mortar used to construct the base and substructure of the fountain have been retained for analysis on the advice of the LCC Heritage Works Manager. This analysis may provide information on the original construction of the monument. The results may also be relevant to the conservation and reinstatement of the monument, when that occurs. Several drains, sewers and other culverted services were noted in surrounding areas where excavations for LCC Utilities Works were undertaken on St. Stephen’s Green North and Dawson Street. None of these features appeared to extend into the footprint of the Lady Grattan Heritage Works area.
