Planning permission was granted by South Dublin County Council for the development of nine dwellings at Castle Road, Saggart Village. The site lay within the Zone of Archaeological Potential of DU021-034. Monitoring of ground works associated with the development was a requirement of the planning permission.
Housing has already been built on the greater part of the adjoining site and testing was undertaken in March 2002 under Licence 02E0179 and in 2011 under Licence 11E0061.
The topsoil removal took place in February 2014. A machine with a 2m-wide toothless bucket cleared the entire site of topsoil. Two features were identified in the course of the monitoring, however investigation revealed that both were isolated and of post-medieval to modern date, consequently topsoil removal continued and no other features of potential archaeological significance were identified in the course of that work. A number of sherds of medieval to modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil but these were not associated with any identifiable feature. No other potential feature was identified in the course of the monitoring.
