An archaeological evaluation was conducted prior to the proposed demolition of the monastery building and construction of a new primary school at St Colman’s Abbey Primary School, Courtney Hill, Newry, Co. Down. The proposed development site is located adjacent to DOW 046:021, identified as a Cistercian Abbey.

A series of 9 trenches were monitored within the area of the development. All trenches were excavated with a mechanically digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The site was found to naturally slope from east to west although it had been levelled in the past, cutting into the underlying bedrock.

Nothing of archaeological interest was identified in any of the trenches.
