An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed demolition of an existing residential property and construction of 8 apartments at 87E Bryansford Road, Newcastle. The proposed development site is located adjacent to DOW 049: 007, identified on the SMR as Early Christian rath and known as Cillian’s Fort.
A previous phase of archaeological evaluation (AE/13/79) was undertaken during April 2013. This consisted of the mechanical excavation of a single trench, aligned east-west across what will be the rear wall of the future property. No evidence of any archaeological activity was identified within this trench.
This phase of the development consisted of the excavation of 6 trenches using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
