An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed extraction of sand and gravel and construction of a temporary processing plant on lands approximately 12m south of 95 Leestone Road, Kilkeel.

A total of 11 test trenches were excavated across the area of the proposed development using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The location and, in some cases, the length of the test trenches were dictated by the low overhead electric cables that transect the site. In addition to this, the area where Trenches 1 and 2 were to be located was found to have been previously quarried and as such were therefore excluded from the evaluation. Most contained evidence of plough furrows from recent agricultural activity.

Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of the evaluation.
