An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a general purpose agricultural building at 149 Ballynahinch Road, Dromore, Co. Down. The site is to the immediate north-west of the scheduled monument DOW 021:028, which is listed as a large hilltop enclosure.
The evaluation was undertaken in advance of submission of a planning application to identify any potential archaeological remains surviving within the proposed development area.
Two test trenches were excavated by a machine fitted with a toothless bucket. In both trenches, topsoil was on average 0.26m deep and a dark brown silty clay containing moderate amounts of small and medium sized stones. It directly overlay subsoil which was a reddish sandy clay becoming increasing more orange towards the south-west. A modern field drain, consisting of angular and sub-angular stones, extended across the site.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified within the trench.
