An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a single residential dwelling on lands to the south-east of 87 Ardmillan Road, Ardmillan.
The proposed development site is located within the designated Area of Archaeological Potential for Ardmillan, and contains one scheduled monument DOW 17:31, a prehistoric cup-marked stone.
Under a previous planning application (X/2007/0565/O) an archaeological evaluation of the development area was undertaken (licence AE/08/46). This consisted of the excavation of 6 test trenches across the site. No archaeological material was identified within any of the trenches. Despite the lack of material identified within this previous evaluation, there remained the possibility that archaeological material may survive beyond the area of the test trenches.
The current evaluation took the form of a monitored topsoil strip within the footprint of the development incorporating the dwelling, access and garage. This area measured 27.4m north-north-west/south-south-east to 24.8m.
No evidence of any archaeological deposits was identified during the course of the evaluation.
