Test trenching was carried out as an archaeological evaluation scheme relating to the specific issue on the proposed quarry site – the presence of a ‘fort’ DOW015-065 that falls within the proposed extraction area. Trenching revealed a 4m diameter ditch and therefore the rath indicated on the 1st edition OS Map Down, Sheet 15, did in fact survive. It was agreed that the location would be EDM surveyed and the site backfilled. To facilitate this, posts were placed marking trench ends and ditch edges and the site backfilled. The developer will excavate the rath prior to the commencement of development and following the grant of planning permission in line with mitigation measures discussed with NIEA Built Heritage.
