A programme of archaeological works was undertaken during conservation works at Fan an Charta Friary (DG098-031001- Religious house – Franciscan Third Order Regular), Ballysaggart, St John’s Point, Co. Donegal in October 2014 under an extension of Licence No. 13E0145.
The archaeological works comprised the hand excavation and recording of two 1m x 1m pits (Pits 1 and 2) to facilitate the erection of raking shores. A small number of modern finds, including ceramics, glass and animal bones were recovered from the excavated pits. A single sherd of glazed late medieval pottery was recovered from the topsoil in Pit 2. Rubble and mortar from a collapsed/ demolished wall was encountered under the topsoil in Pit 1. This was not encountered in Pit 2, suggesting that it is localised to the eastern part of the area investigated.
