Archaeological monitoring of initial topsoil stripping/primary ground reduction works was undertaken on 3 December 2014, having been commissioned by A.J. Speer & Sons, and relates to a Planning Condition requested by Northern Ireland Environment Agency: Historic Monuments Unit (NIEA:HMU) under Planning Policy Statement 6: Built Heritage 4 (PPS 6:BH4) for archaeological mitigation associated with a proposed development site at lands opposite 325 Hillhead Road, Knockcloughrim, Co. Londonderry, (Planning Ref: H/2006/0764/F). Development of the site is to include the construction of housing comprising twenty-eight dwellings, with twelve garages and a temporary sewage treatment works.

Construction works at the site are to be undertaken in several distinct phases.  Consequently, the monitoring works which are the subject of this report relate to an area within the north-west portion of the proposed development area only.

Topsoil removal revealed undisturbed glacial subsoil, which primarily consisted of a light brown orange sandy clay which was encountered at a depth of 0.2–0.6m. No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified within the area under investigation during this phase of archaeological works at the site.
