Archaeological monitoring of initial ground reduction works was undertaken during January - March 2015, having been commissioned by The Inner City Trust, and relates to a Planning Condition requested by Northern Ireland Environment Agency: Historic Monuments Unit (NIEA:HMU) under Planning Policy Statement 6: Built Heritage 4 (PPS 6:BH4) for archaeological mitigation associated with a proposed development comprising the proposed construction of a Garden of Reflection located in a courtyard to the rear of Pump Street and Bishop Street and accessible through Pump Street, Bishop Street and London Street, Derry (Planning Ref: A/2014/0097/F).

Following excavation and construction connected with the stabilization of adjacent buildings, primary ground reduction works largely revealed glacial subsoil, which primarily consisted of a mid-orange sandy clay which was encountered directly below modern overburden/construction layers associated with the buildings and yards which previously occupied portions of the site.

No archaeological features, remains, deposits or artifacts were identified within the area under investigation during archaeological works at the site.
