Pre-development testing and monitoring were carried out at Youghals, Clonakilty, Co. Cork in February and March 2014. The development site is located in the south-east corner of the area of constraint for the historic town of Clonakilty (CO135-052). Nine machine-dug trenches and one hand-dug trench were opened at the site in late February. Narrow linear features uncovered in the west of the site proved upon investigation to be non-archaeological. A hand-dug trench was opened at the base of an upright stone (H 1.3m; Wth. 0.37m), possibly a scratching post, which was centrally-located in the north part of the site. Modern potsherds found at the base of the socket confirmed that the stone is a non-antiquity. Frequent modern potsherds and occasional post-medieval wares were recovered from the topsoil during testing and monitoring. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.
