An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development at Bannside Mill, Goban Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh. The proposed development site contains two recorded industrial sites: IHR 679, identified as a linen weaving factory, and IHR 686, identified as brickworks.
Testing within the area associated with Phase 1 was located within the north-east of the site adjacent to the entrance from Goban Street. It was used as a car park and testing in the form of 12 trial pits revealed concrete surfaces overlying fill material up to 1.5m deep in places. This fill material overlay subsoil and no topsoil or original ground levels were encountered.
The results indicate that the area has been extensively landscaped and any archaeological features or deposits, should they have existed, have been destroyed.
