An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed replacement of an existing dwelling at 114 Navan Fort Road, Armagh. The proposed development site is located within an area of significant archaeological interest which incorporates the Bronze Age and Iron Age landscape surrounding Navan Fort. Prominent monuments within this protected area and in close proximity to the development site include Haughey’s Fort (ARM 12:13), the King’s Stables (ARM 12:14) and Bronze Age linear ditches (ARM 12:102).
Two test trenches orientated approximately north-west to south-east were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development. Both trenches measured approximately 1.8m wide and were excavated to glacial subsoil which consisted of orange/pink boulder clay containing moderate stone.
No evidence of any archaeological deposits was identified during the course of the evaluation.
