Archaeological supervision of geotechnical testing works at Portballintrae Harbour, Co. Antrim, was undertaken on 7 July 2014. The works comprised the erection of temporary exclusion zone and hazard signs and the subsequent excavation of investigative trial pits and boreholes, intended to assess the current condition of the Scheduled Monument of Portballintrae Harbour (MRA 006:030) and to help inform proposals for repair works to the structure.
A total of c.9m of linear trenching was excavated, comprising 3 test pits, each measuring up to 3m by 0.9m. Within each pit, the top or back of the existing coursed stonework was exposed to enable photographic recording. Due to the nature of the pits and the potential instability of the infill material, it was not possible to undertake measured recording.
Within each of the three pits excavated, modern material was identified within the rubble and backfill to the rear of the stonework associated with the quay. Monitoring of the excavation of the geotechnical test pits did not reveal any further information regarding the original construction of the east quay or later phases of repair or reinstatement.
