A previous evaluation the development identified significant archaeological remains suggesting that this general area may be part of a wider archaeological landscape (AE/07/194).
For this evaluation, a total of 21 test trenches were excavated by a machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
The first phase of the development consisted of the excavation of 5 test trenches across the site. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted within any of the trenches.
The second phase of the development consisted of the excavation of a further 16 test trenches across the site. During the course of this evaluation, a number of deposits of archaeological potential were identified within Trenches 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 15. One of these deposits was charcoal-rich and consisted of heat-shattered stones. Further investigation of this material revealed the truncated remains of a burnt mound or fulacht fiadh. The remaining archaeological activity consisted of randomly scattered pits of no discernible date or function.
