An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the construction of a new extension to the security building at the Old Bushmills Distillery, Co Antrim. The existing security hut is located within the car park of the Distillery. It is surrounded on 3 sides by tarmac road, however the north side consists of a small grassed area. This will be the location for the proposed extension.
The first section of topsoil removal quickly established that the development area was heavily crossed with a variety of live services and this prevented the removal of topsoil across the remainder of the site. In order to facilitate an evaluation of the site, it was decided to excavate two test trenches across the footprint of the development avoiding where possible any services. The test trenches stopped at formation level without any archaeological deposits being exposed. Should any archaeological remains exist here, there are located at a depth that will prevent them from being impacted upon by the construction works.
