Archaeological testing was undertaken at the Rathlin Island Borehole Compound, Co. Antrim following on from a desktop assessment carried out by IAC Ltd (October 2014).

Prior to the test trenching, it was known that the proposed development area contained a recorded monument: four circular crop marks identified from an aerial photograph (ANT001:068). Previous archaeological investigations carried out during the installation of the water pipeline at the development area had revealed evidence for archaeological material (McConway & McQuade 2003).

On 18th November 2014 two trenches, measuring 30 linear metres, were excavated across the proposed development area. The aim of this testing was to ascertain whether previously unidentified archaeological material survived below the surface within the development area. No features of archaeological potential were identified during the course of the assessment. As such, no further archaeological mitigation was required.
