The wind farm development is located on sub-rectangular area of ground at Dunbeg which is approximately 8km north-east of Limavady in County Derry. The area of ground measures approximately 1750m at its widest point west-south-west/east-north-east by 1650m north to south. The development consisted of 14 turbines, an electrical sub-station and control building, a meteorological pole and 3 site accesses. Groundworks also involved the construction of access roads, temporary site compounds, storage areas and associated works. The development site is bounded to the north-west by the Bolea Road and to the south by Broad Road. Access was created to the development site from both these roads.
Due to the presence of a number of recorded archaeological features within the vicinity, conditions were placed on planning approval which included archaeological monitoring of ground works, which took place under licence AE/13/054. Site works were phased beginning in October 2013 with construction of the access roads, hard standings, turbine blade set down areas, temporary storage areas and compound. Construction of the turbine bases commenced in December 2013 and all these works were completed in March 2014. Further monitoring was undertaken in three related areas under licence AE/14/138. This work involved attendance at cable trenching from one of the turbines, to the nearby A37 road; eastwards along the A37 for roughly 150m and finally from the A37 back to the sub-station.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during monitoring of ground works within the footprint of the wind farm development nor along the A37 road section of the works.
