An assessment completed by the author for the Dunlavin Watermain Rehabilitation Project in  April 2012 found that part of the upgrade works were located in proximity to three recorded monuments all of which were within the archaeological constraint area for the Dunlavin, which is classified as a historic town (WI015-016).

This town is an example of an Anglo Norman borough which was extensively built over in the 18th century. It was given a more geometric plan when it was laid out by the Tynte family in the 18th century, thus obliterating its medieval layout.

Monitoring of the SI works were carried out between 10 and 21 January 2013. All trenches within the archaeological constraint area as identified in the 2012 assessment were monitored and the stratigraphy was recorded. No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed in any of the trenches.
