This summary concerns the results of archaeological monitoring under licence 12E162 of Site Investigation (SI) works in Arklow carried out for RPS Consulting Engineers on behalf of Wicklow County Council in advance of a series of watermain rehabilitation projects throughout County Wicklow. The works were carried out to locate the watermain and any additional services in proximity to it. This information will be used to design the method of rehabilitation for the watermain.

An archaeological assessment report was completed for this project in May 2012 and found that part of the upgrade works were located in the archaeological constraint area for Arklow town, however no RMP sites would be directly impacted upon. Outside of the constraint area for Arklow, the hotspot main to be upgraded north of the Avoca River on the Dublin road would impact on the constraint area associated with one RMP, a font which is located in the grounds of Templerainey church.

The SI works were carried out between 26 March and 2 April 2013. However it was not possible to complete the trench excavations within Arklow town as the main street had previously been concreted over.

All trenches were monitored and the stratigraphy was recorded. No finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed in any of the trenches.
