An assessment was carried out on the proposed site of a development at Weston Close, Wicklow. WI025-065 is located within the development.
Seven burials and other archaeological features were identified in 1990 on the site by Georgina Scally and as a result further building works were not completed. In 2008 a fresh application was made for the construction of three houses; it was refused after an appeal to An Bord Pleanála. One of the reasons for this refusal was that adequate archaeological assessment had not been carried out.
For the current campaign, the entire site was subjected to intensive testing by the license holder and under the supervision of osteologist Mara Lee Tesorieri.
The test trenches revealed the burials identified in the 1990 assessment along with several other features which may be of archaeological significance. The remains were exposed on the top of a small hill which sloped to the east. No material was exposed at the base of this small hill where the proposed development was to be located.
