Testing and geophysical survey were undertaken as part of a planning application for the construction of a single dwelling at Bregorteen, Co. Wexford. The development site contains a church site, WX036-039, the remains of which were removed c. 1970. Geophysical survey showed that there were several features of archaeological potential in the area of the church site. Testing was undertaken to ascertain the nature of the anomalies. Testing showed that a c. 2.5m wide curvilinear ditch is present on the site. This ditch appears to be enclosing the area which contains the remains of the church. It is therefore assumed that this feature is early in date, probably belonging to the Early Christian period.
It was recommended that the ditch be preserved in situ by altering the position of the proposed dwelling so that there is no impact from construction on this feature. Monitoring of groundworks was also recommended.
