Monitoring was carried out in Mullingar as part of the Westmeath County Council Conservation Stage 3 Watermains Rehabilitation Works. The majority of the works were carried out using pipe replacement technologies including directional drilling and pipe bursting. This installation method required the excavation of launch and receptor pits along the route of the scheme. This pits were usually located above existing services and the ground was therefore previously disturbed.

At the junction of Austin Friars Street, McCurtain Street and Pearse Street a trench was dug north-south across the road. This area had previously exposed human remains thought to be associated with part of the graveyard of the Augustinian Priory of St Mary (WM019-089017). Excavations carried out in April 2014 in this area identified previously disturbed human bone and the in situ remains of one individual that had been truncated along its southern extent by earlier service installation. The remains, orientated east-west, consisted of the fragments of the right pelvis, right femur, upper part of right tibia and fibula. These remains, following consultation with National Monuments, were fully excavated.
