The first phase of work at Fore, Co Westmeath comprised an assessment of the proposed improvement works behalf of Fore Heritage and Amenity Group. Subsequently ministerial consent was granted for these enhancements and improvement works to the public amenity area at Fore. Monitoring of ground disturbance works associated with the erection of a wooden post and rail fence at the motte and bailey was undertaken in November 2013 on non-OPW managed lands. The public access forms part of a new walkway, c. 3km in length, which includes the abbey (WM004-3501) and the motte and bailey. Each of the fence post locations was augered and the post was inserted into the tested pad. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were recorded from any of the post pads.
