Works comprising replacement of footpaths and installation of services were carried out over the period 6 March to 3 May 2013 by Waterford County Council along St Augustine Street, Dungarvan. The works were monitored without licence. Along the eastern side of the street a c. 95m stretch of footpath was removed and replaced, trenches were dug and service ducts installed. The trenches were machine-dug and were c. 0.25m deep and 0.4m wide. From a point immediately south of St Augustine’s church a trench was dug extending south-westwards across the street at a 45 degree angle, to the footpath on the west side, then southwards, almost to the end of the street, before turning south-eastwards to the south-eastern corner of the street. This trench was on average 0.7m deep and 0.6m wide. In addition to the trenches three pits were dug along the eastern side of the street to receive electrical control units. The pits measured 0.6m x 0.4m x 0.6m deep.
A trench was also dug from the edge of the footpath through the grounds of St Augustine’s Church, running from Pit 1, under the boundary wall, to the north-western corner of the church.
The only archaeological features encountered were three stone-lined drains: one ran north-south along the eastern side of the street; the second, partially destroyed by an existing sewer trench, ran close to and parallel with the footpath on the western side of the street; the third, at the southern end of the street, ran south-east/north-west towards the second.
Significantly, no evidence was found for the presence of the town wall, which is commonly believed to have run north-south along this street.
