CotswoldRubicon, have been retained by Mouchel on behalf of The Department for Regional Development, Roads Service to carry out a programme of archaeological evaluation along the route of the proposed new A5 Western Transport Corridor. The proposed development comprises the construction of offline dual carriageway extending for 37km. Archaeological evaluation took place in the vicinity of Errigal Keerogue Church and Cross (TYR059-006) a monument in State Care. This site relates to Section 3 of the route South of Omagh – Ballygawley, Co. Tyrone. Hand excavation of test pits was carried out at Area 17 in the townland of Gort between 29 January 2013 and 1 February 2013. One feature was recorded, a French drain, identified in Test pits 1 and 6. The French drain was orientated east-north-east/west-south-west containing mid-dark grey clay with frequent stone inclusions, and sub-angular stones were lining the cut of the drain. A total of eight finds and one sample were recovered. Finds were predominately ceramic of post-medieval date. However, a recovered flint blade may be of prehistoric date. One sample was recovered, a piece of metal slag.
