Monitoring was undertaken during works associated with the extension of a burial ground at Killea Church and Graveyard in December 2013. Planning permission was granted by North Tipperary County Council to extend the graveyard, including the provision of an access roadway from the existing cemetery gates with car parking area and all necessary ground works.
A Geophysical Survey of the proposed area of development was undertaken by Earthsound Ltd. in 2010 (Licence No. 10R114) and an assessment with testing by Barker Archaeological Services in 2011 (Licence No. 110451).
The ground disturbance works comprised the construction of a 1.5m high concrete wall around the perimeter of the site. The trench was on average 1.2m wide by 0.3-0.5m in depth. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were recorded while monitoring the excavation of the wall foundations.
