Testing and subsequent monitoring was carried out in Mullinahone between August and October 2013 as part of the South Tipperary Water Conservation Scheme, Stage 3: Network Rehabilitation, Fethard RWSS-Contract No. 3. Testing and monitoring were carried out along the line of the pipeline on Carrick Street, Kickham Street and from the junction of Carrick Street towards the Bridge in Mullinahone town as well as intermittent monitoring in the town.
Monitoring of an open cut trench (1.1m deep by 0.45m wide) through Mullinahone exposed a consistent stratigraphy throughout comprising tarmac and roadbase overlying a mixed deposit of mid brown silty clay, bedrock and natural boulder clay. In particular along Carrick Street bedrock directly underlay the road surface. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted.
It was noted that the foundations of the castle (TS063-071001) to the east of Carrick Street are at a greater elevation than the existing street. It is clear that significant removal of material was carried out during the construction of the houses and road at Carrick Street and any remaining archaeological material was likely to have been entirely removed in the past. The excavation works were carried out parallel to an existing sewage pipe and the western side of the trench along Carrick Street had been disturbed.
