Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the existing Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of a roundwood track, orientated east-west. For 30m at the north half of the track longitudinally set brushwoods were present, thinning out to the north. This was fixed by randomly set stakes. To the south the stakes extend roughly for 1-1.5m and are overlain by a structure of transversely set roundwoods/brushwoods curving from WSW-ENE to north-south. A substructure of longitudinally set roundwoods and brushwoods was a bit unstructured, especially in the west.aBoth parts of the structure were held in place in the eastern part by a few stakes and most likely are contemporary. Other element recorded on site include a narrow east-west orientated footpath of roundwoods/brushwoods, a hurdle fragment which is most likely re-used and a group of partly dislocated east-west orientated brushwoods may have been a platform.
