Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
The site consisted of a roundwood trackway which measured 22m in length (east-west), 1.8m in width and 0.2m in depth, lying above a small brushwood substructure with irregularly set stakes along the edges and throughout. The trackway also lay above platforms c496 and c497 to the west.
Within the trackway, crude wedge points measuring 60mm were identified on some of the better preserved roundwood ends, and one example had toolmarks on both ends, a chisel and an adjacent chisel point. No obvious toolmarks were noted on timber ends within the substructure
Some 23 upright mainly hazel stakes were irregularly set along the length of the trackway. Of the preserved stake ends recorded, two had chisel points.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
