Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
The site consisted of a basal layer of roundwood and brushwood with no obvious orientation, located below the main trackway element.
This trackway element consisted of a layer of irregularly placed timbers including two possible half split planks, roundwoods and brushwoods, orientated approximately north-west/south-east. The brushwood elements of this trackway ranged from 0.15-2.18m in length and from 20-50mm in diameter, whilst the roundwood elements ranged from 0.6-1.7m in length and from 0.09-0.12m in diameter. The most significant structural element of the trackway were two possible half split planks, one of which measured 5.5m in length, with a second measuring 2.4m in length. Due to the poor state of preservation, especially on the upper surfaces, no toolmarks were visible on these timbers.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
