Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of an irregular trackway, consisting of two structural elements, orientated approximately north-east/south-west, and disturbed brushwood platform at the western (?) extremity.
The earliest trackway element measured 9.5m in length (north-east/south-west) and 2.5m in width, and was composed of brushwoods, roundwoods and some oak stakes. The later trackway example measured 17m in length (north-east/south-west) and 2.8m in width and was composed of brushwoods, roundwoods and oak timber fragments. The platform consisted mainly of hazel and willow and measured 2.6m in length (east-west), and c. 3m in width and had a depth of 0.06 m.
All of the structures were generally in a poor state of preservation; however oak stakes from the earlier trackway demonstrated some possible adze marks up to 50-60mm in width, whilst one of the track planks from the later structure had a mortice joint indicating use in a previous structure.
Preliminary dates from samples taken from the trackway/togher returned a date of 1107-917 BC (UBA 25564).
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
