Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A program of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.

This site consisted of a trackway structure extending 15.2m east-west, measuring 1.3m in width and a depth of c. 0.07m. The trackway was noted to narrow towards the eastern end of site.

The upper layer to the trackway consisted of mainly ash roundwoods ranging in length from 1.3-4m and from 60-140mm in diameter. Predominately hazel brushwood elements, ranging in size from 0.2m to 1.2m in length and from 20-60mm in diameter, had been used to infill between the ash roundwoods. The lower layer consisted of mainly hazel brushwoods ranging in length from 0.1m to 1.6m, and from 9-32mm in diameter. The poor state of preservation prevented the full length of the brushwoods being established.

Some 42 stakes of mainly ash and willow were set at irregular intervals along the lower brushwood layer, ranging from 0.06-0.65m in length and from 20-90mm in diameter. The majority of stakes had chisel toolmarks of varying dimensions.

The site lay below a well humified marginal forest peat, containing significant amounts of root, tree trunks and infrequent amounts of eriophorum.

The site was constructed above trackway site 13LIS39 and there was 0.02-0.04m of peat between the two sites.

This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
