Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
This site consisted of a trackway orientated east-west for a length of 25m, measuring 2m in width and 0.22m in depth. The roundwoods measured 0.06-0.21m in diameter and 1.5-4m in length. The brushwoods measured 0.03-0.06m in diameter and up to 2.5m in length.
The construction method resulted in a generally quite dense structure becoming slightly more fragmentary at the western end of the trackway. Due to poor preservation most of the worked ends were damaged.
The site was located below Site 13LIS40. At its eastern extent site 13LIS39 was fen peat graduating to a well humified peat.
Preliminary dates from samples taken from the trackway/togher returned a date of 769-40 BC (UBA 24064).
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
