Following an assessment of the proposed impact of an extension to the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) in Lisheen Mine, 16 archaeological sightings were recorded in June 2013 (see 13E059). A programme of excavation was carried out between July and September 2013 which resulted in the excavation of these 16 sites and a further 28 sites which were identified during the course of excavation.
Site 13LIS36 consisted of a carved ash rod (13E327:362:1) located in raised bog peat, and a partially degraded brushwood lay alongside it, which showed some indications of working. The ash rod was 0.97m long and 30mm in diameter, while the degraded brushwood was of similar length and 28mm in diameter.
Site 13LIS37 was adjacent to 13LIS36, and consisted of a poorly preserved small peatland structure of mainly holly brushwoods laid parallel and orientated roughly east-west. This brushwood structure was bounded along its northern and southern edges by roundwoods. Four small stakes appeared to have been positioned to hold the structure in place. The brushwood elements were between 10-30mm in diameter and 0.08-0.32m in length, whilst the roundwood elements ranged in length from 0.55-1.2m and from 62-70mm in diameter.
The peat around the site consisted of raised bog peat which is mostly humified with some small pockets of eriophorum.
This site was fully resolved and no further archaeological mitigation is required.
